Health and Safety Policy

Rationale

The Management Committee is required to ensure that all hazards on the site at the training centre are identified and that the training centre is safe for all students, staff and visitors.  This policy aims to ensure that procedures are set up to ensure that the requirements of the Management Committee under the Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Act 2002 are met.

Purpose

  1. To ensure that the training centre is a safe place of work for staff, students and visitors.

  2. To maintain correct procedures for the maintenance of equipment and materials to ensure that they are safe and properly handled.

  3. To establish safe working practices and to implement procedures to ensure that these practices are followed with a focus on systematic management of all hazards.

  4. To provide supervision and training.

  5. To ensure that all students, staff and visitors understand the concept of a safe and healthy workplace.

  6. To accept the need for delegating responsibility for promotion of a safe and healthy workplace to all involved at the training centre ensuring good faith cooperation.

Guidelines

  1. The Management Committee has developed a Health and Safety manual that reflects the growing awareness of compliance to OSH standards.

  2. Staff and students will be made aware of the training centre's health and safety rules and the Management Committee will ensure they are aware of the Health and Safety Manual.

  3. At the beginning of each year, a Health and Safety Committee will be set up consisting of staff, students and Management.

  4. Staff and students will be encouraged through the meetings to identify hazards and to bring forward issues concerning health and safety.

  5. Staff and students will be made aware of emergency procedures for fire, storm, bomb threat, earthquake, chemical spill, gas leak, explosion, structure collapse and equipment failure – a Health and Safety Flip Chart has been developed for each workshop that covers evacuation procedures in case of an emergency.

  6. Hazards will be identified to all staff, students and visitors where possible.

  7. On a continual basis, hazards will be identified and noted to enable action to be taken.

  8. Training needs for staff will become part of the Professional Development programme at the training centre.

Conclusion

This policy is consistent with the goals of the Training Centre and is linked to the Quality Management System and Charter and Profile documents.
